There is something amazing and deeply freeing about trusting God. Trust is one of the most foundational aspects of the believer's walk with Christ. It is the bridge between what God has said and what we have not yet seen. It is what enables us to keep moving forward when the path is unclear, the answers are delayed, and the outcome remains uncertain. Anyone can trust God when everything makes sense. The true test of trust comes when we cannot see the next step, but choose to obey anyway.
Trusting God does not mean we know every detail. It means we know the One who holds every detail. When life feels uncertain, His faithfulness remains steady. When answers are delayed, His wisdom remains perfect. When the road ahead is unclear, His hand is still guiding. Even when we cannot trace His hand, we can trust His heart (Charles Spurgeon).
What Does It Mean to Trust?
The primary Hebrew word translated as "trust" in Proverbs 3:5 is batach (Strong's H982).
Definition: To trust, To have confidence in, To be secure, To feel safe, To be bold because of confidence and To rely upon completely.
The word paints the picture of one who rests securely, feel safe, act boldly, completely rely on God, because they are fully persuaded that God is totally dependable.
Biblical synonyms include: Confidence, Reliance, Dependence, Assurance, Security, Faith, Rest and Confidence in God's faithfulness.
Trust is more than believing God exists. Trust is placing the full weight of your confidence, reliance, dependence, assurance, security, faith upon Him and His Faithfulness.
Trusting Beyond Understanding
One of the most well known scriptures on trust is found in Proverbs:
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. " —Proverbs 3:5,6 (KJV)
Notice that Scripture does not tell us to trust God with part of our heart. It says ALL of our heart. Many of us trust God with our salvation, but struggle to trust Him with our finances, relationships, health, career, business, future, or calling. Yet, God desires complete dependence upon Him.
Trust often requires surrendering our need to understand everything. We want explanations. God often offers His presence. We want certainty. God often gives us promises (i.e. He will direct our paths (v.6)). Faith is not rooted in knowing every detail. Faith is rooted in knowing God.
Trust Requires Taking Steps
How many times have you stepped forward without knowing exactly what would happen next? That is trust rooted in faith. When Abraham left his homeland without knowing where God would ultimately lead him, he was trusting God. When Peter stepped out of the boat onto the water, he was trusting God. When Moses stood before the Red Sea with nowhere else to go, he was trusting God.
Trust is often revealed through obedience. It is one thing to say we trust God. It is another thing to move when He says move, wait when He says wait, and surrender when He says surrender.
The Benefits of Trusting God
1. Trust Produces Peace
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." —Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)
The more we trust God, the less room fear has to dominate our thoughts. Peace is not the absence of problems. Peace is the presence of confidence in God.
2. Trust Brings Direction
"In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."—Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)
When we trust God and submit our plans to Him, He provides guidance for the journey ahead. He may not reveal the entire roadmap, but He faithfully provides direction for the next step.
3. Trust Creates Stability
"Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit." —Jeremiah 17:7-8 (KJV)
The person who trusts God remains rooted even during difficult seasons. Storms may come, but trust keeps believers anchored.
4. Trust Defeats Fear
"What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." —Psalm 56:3 (KJV)
Trust does not mean fear never appears. It means fear no longer has the final say. Faith rises when trust is placed in God's character.
5. Trust Leads to Rest
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."—Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
Many burdens we carry were never meant for our shoulders, our back or our limbs to carry. Trust allows us to release what we are carrying and place it into the hands of the One who can, Jesus.
Why God Is Worth Trusting
- God has never failed.
- His character is perfect.
- His wisdom is flawless.
- His timing is intentional.
- His promises are trustworthy.
Throughout Scripture, generation after generation discovered that God remained faithful regardless of circumstances. The same God who provided for Abraham, protected Joseph, sustained Elijah, delivered Daniel, and raised Jesus from the dead remains faithful today. Trusting God is not blind faith. It is confidence in the proven character of a faithful Father.
Trust Him
Perhaps you are standing in a season where answers are delayed. Perhaps you are facing a decision without clarity. Perhaps you are praying for something that has not yet happened. Trust Him!
- Trust Him when you understand.
- Trust Him when you do not.
- Trust Him when the doors open.
- Trust Him when they remain closed.
- Trust Him when the path is clear.
- Trust Him when you can only see the next step.
The God who has never failed will not start a track record of failing with you.
